Two if the most important elements for a successful move are setting a plan and being adequately prepared. In our experience at Attention to Detail Moving, we have seen the difference that good packing can make. Planning to pack smart will not only help to ensure that your property is safe during the move, but it can also help to make the move run more smoothly. If you want to eliminate some of the stress and hassle that can come with moving, follow a few of these packing tips.

Start Early

Moving to a new home can be exciting, but nobody really looks forward to packing. It is a bit of a chore, and for that reason, many people will put the task off until the last minute. This tends to be a big mistake and it can result in several problems that will make your move more of hassle than it needs to be.
When you pack in a hurry, it is going to result in a pack that is less organized and in your rush to get things done, it could cause you to improperly pack items, exposing them to the potential for damage.

If you get a bit of a head start, it provides you with the opportunity to pack in a way that is more organized and you don’t have the stress that comes with having to complete this important task in a very limited amount of time.

Get Packing Supplies

Before you start packing, you should make sure that you have enough packing supplies. Get and organize your packing tape, boxes, bubble wrap, foam and totes. It is unlikely that you will have enough of all of these materials around the house, so you should make some effort to procure them.

Your moving company may be able to sell you some of these materials, but you can also get some stuff by asking at local stores. If you go to your supermarket or a retailer and ask them to save you some boxes, they are generally very willing to help out.

Pack in Order

When you get an early start on your packing, you are obviously going to want to pack things in a certain order. Start by packing things that are off-season and the things that you rarely use. Then, as the date of the move approaches, you move to packing things that are non-essential, but still used somewhat frequently. After that, you can pack the stuff that you need and use every day.

Get Rid of Things

If you have lived in your current home for a long time, then there is a good chance that you have some stuff that you no longer want or need. The move to a new house provides you with a good opportunity to sort through all of your possessions and get rid of the things that serve no purpose.

When you are going through your stuff, try to identify things that are going to do nothing more than add clutter to your new home. Consider whether it can be sold, given away or if it is just junk and get it out of the house.  Getting rid of these items will save time and effort on the move and it can help to cut the cost of moving.

Use Labels

When you get to your new house, organizing your packed items and getting them unpacked and put away can be time consuming. However, if you pack smart and label your boxes, you can make this task much easier.

Label every box by what it contains and where it goes. This will make it much easier to get unpacked and save you a lot of time when you get to the new home. If you want to make the process even easier, you can even label them by priority (high, medium or low).

Pack Things Properly

When you go to pack all of your stuff, you want to make sure to pack things in a way that protects them from damage. Make sure to box the items carefully and use an adequate amount of cushioning to ensure that items will reach the new home unharmed. Additionally, you want to make sure not to overload your boxes. An overloaded box can easily burst when it is in transit or the bottom could come out when you are carrying it into the new home.

When you planned ahead and pack smart, you set yourself up for the greatest possibility of a move that is limited in stress.
